It’s no surprise that we all have struggled with the question, “What’s my purpose in life?” So don’t think you’re alone and that everyone around you knows their purpose, because the truth of the matter is that most people have no freaking idea what their life’s work should be. As Zig Ziglar said, “Don’t be a wandering generality, but rather, a meaningful specific.” In this letter to you, I hope my experiences and advice will in some way. Now you’re probably thinking in your mind, “What does an 18 year old kid know about purpose?” Well, let me tell you…

Just over two years ago, I was just like any other teenage kid. I was a good kid that everyone liked and I made good grades but there was something within me that always felt trapped. I was a very low energy person with no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I was oblivious to the unlimited possibilities that lay before me. No one could have convinced me of the dramatic transformation I was about to go through. In November of 2014, I had traveled to see my older brother who lives in Atlanta, GA. One night we decided to hop in the hot tub (it’s tradition). As the night went on, our conversations got deeper. My brother and his wife were giving me advice about high school, college, and life. Up until this point, I had been questioning my life’s purpose more and more everyday. I eventually just asked, “What about purpose? You know, like, what I’m here for.” My brother had an surpised look on his face and responded with something along the lines of, “The true purpose of everyone’s life is to add value. I can honestly tell you I don’t know; I’m still figuring it out myself. But like I said, you’ve got to find a way to add value to people’s lives and develop a strategy that will allow you to make the biggest impact on the world and become the best version of yourself.”

Now I didn’t wake up the next morning any differently, but I now had a basic idea of what I was supposed to do. It took me a few more months of developing myself by reading and listening to the giants out there that have achieved so much, not just financially, but spiritually and emotionally. The speaker that made me aware of the greatness within me was a man by the name of Les Brown. I would tell you how he changed my life but that’s another story for another time. I took this advice and tucked it away in the back of my mind because I wasn’t too sure what it exactly meant at the time. This knowledge would later guide me to the beginnings of a wonderful journey of self-development.

So if you’re wrestling with what your reason for being is, I hope this article has helped you gain some clarity and insight as to what your life’s mission may be. Now don’t become discouraged by the fact that you’ll never know in exact detail what the future holds, but become encouraged by the truth which is that you are in control of your destiny and no one can take that away from you. Start a list of things that you’re good at or want to become good at and begin practicing one thing. Who knows, that one thing might be what will lead you to your destiny. Always ask yourself, “Is this what’s going to allow me to add the most value? Is this how I’m going to change the most lives?” By asking yourself these questions, you can be sure you will find the path to a rich and fulfilled life.

I hope my experience and advice will inspire you to make a change in your life. I’d be honored to get feedback or hear how your life has changed, so feel free to contact me! Maybe we’ll meet in person one day if that is in our destinies, if so, I look forward to it! As you continue on your life journey, just remember, you are blessed and highly favored and a child of the most high God!
