Lately, many of you have asked me to write about self-doubt and achieving your dreams despite the nay-sayers. This is a constant struggle for anybody but there are ways that you can block it all out and live the life you have imagined. I know what it’s like to not believe in yourself and I know what it’s like to have others not believe in you. So I’m going to share with you how I have trained my mind to focus on the positive and master my self-talk.
When I was in middle school, I constantly struggled with a low self-esteem and I was always putting myself down and beating myself up for not putting in the work needed to reach my destiny. It was a vicious cycle. Any time I wanted to workout or read an inspiring book I would ask myself, “what’s the use?” and then go back to watching TV. This mindset was brought on by what others said about me. You see, my older brother was an amazing football player when he was in high school and I had the goal of being just like him. However that was not my main strength. People would tell me I would never be as strong, fast, or talented as David. My dreams of becoming an all-star football player were destroyed. I felt that that dream was slowly drifting further away from me. I gave up on it. Who knows where I could be right now if I hadn’t let other people’s opinion of me control my destiny. From my time in middle school until 10th grade, I had no idea what my purpose was and I was depressed by my own self-talk and others’ words. Life was controlling me at that point.
When I discovered my true purpose and destiny I felt such a huge sense of purpose and drive explode within me. This purpose of mine is to add value to people’s lives by using my communication skills and a number of my other talents and abilities to inspire people to live their dreams. With this in mind, I wasn’t going to let anybody take it away from me. I was listening to motivational speakers every single day to build up my self-confidence. Up until this point I was always telling myself what I couldn’t do and that I was worthless. But the voices I was listening to everyday were telling me that I had something special and that I had greatness within me and that I was here on this planet to do something no one else has ever done before. I was liberated. At the beginning, many people supported me in my vision but as I continued to pursue it many fell off the bandwagon. People that I thought deeply cared about me told me to give it up and to be realistic. And I’ll tell you right now, it hurt more than anything. But it’s like what Dexter Yager said, “Don’t let anybody steal your dream!” I was bound and determined to make this a reality.
I was listening to motivational tapes, CDs, podcasts, and YouTube videos every day from the time I woke up to the time my head hit the pillow. People thought I was crazy for this and many still do but there are those of you who will understand. You have to be unreasonable if you want to make a change in your life and I was unreasonable. I hardly ever listen to music when I’m by myself in the car; it’s not building me up and I’m not learning anything from it. This is how I handle negative people and self-defeating talk; I fill my mind with what is true and what has always been true but for the longest time I chose not to listen to the small voice inside of me that says, “I am unstoppable, I am the one to make my dream become a reality.” By overflowing your mind with positivity, you are thereby drowning out the noise of everyone’s doubts. You are now dancing to the beat of your own drum. What I’m talking about here is a complete mental shift where you are in tune with and cooperating with what God already said about you. As the bible says, “Be not conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Renew your mind and align your self-talk with what God says about you. Mastering your inner self-talk is the main point here because if you can do this you can defeat the outer discussions. Les Brown says, “If there’s no enemy within, the enemy outside can do us no harm.”
As you run toward your dreams, begin to listen to what will inspire you. It may not seem like a big deal but the payoff is huge. What you think determines your reality. So instead of listening to music that only talks about temporary fulfillment, dive into the teachings of those who can give you some tools and tactics on what it takes to have a rich and fulfilled life. By doing this, you’ll be able to ignore the nay-sayers… including the one between your own two ears. It is my hope that you have learned something of value here today and I want you to take this and apply it to your daily life. I promise you if you do this consistently and put it into action, you will be successful.
Have a wonderful week! Now it’s time to go out and seize the day!
You are blessed and highly favored!
